Tomorrow’s World was born of a sense of nostalgia for how we used to view the future. Yesterday’s future was brighter - technology was a saviour, tech companies were benevolent and the sense that humanity progressed upon a linear path to a more just, more equal future was, as yet, unchallenged.

Recent world events - the pandemic, the spread of misinformation, political polarity - have revealed the fragility of our societies, our democracies and our institutions. Do we look back on our past selves as naive or do we embrace nostalgia as an opportunity to connect with our lost idealism?

Loosely, the album charts a thread through the history of algorithmic / automated processes; from Pierre Jaquet-Droz’s famous, clockwork automata to today’s procedural art and AI networks. Throughout, there’s a sense that the human desire to breathe life into the inert has led us into a darker present.

Yesterday’s future was brighter.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
